Bare It All by Velvet Lenae
The good girl stopped being quiet. This is what came out.
• HOW BARE IT ALL BEGAN •
I spent most of my life being careful. I was the self-proclaimed good girl. Head up, legs closed, judging everyone who wasn't. I didn't just play that role. I was her. For a long time, I believed every word of it.
Them my marriage ended. And as frightening as that was, it cracked something open. The good girl had run out of road. There were curiosities I'd been carrying for years, folded up and tucked away, because I'd been taught that wanting them made me too much or not good enough.
It took meeting someone safe for me to finally exhale. In that safety, I reached for the things I'd buried. Not new desires. Mine. The ones that were always there, just waiting for permission and a soft enough place to land.
That awakening didn't just change how I live. It changed what I create. The words started coming. The images started forming. The art felt like the most honest translation of everything I'd been holding back. I got certified. I started teaching. And somewhere in all of that, Bare It All was born.
This is not a confession. It's a collection. Written and visual work from a Black Woman who finally let herself be the full version of who she always was.
